The Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR) has accused the Federal Government of orchestrating a campaign of intimidation against the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, warning that any harm to the former Anambra State governor would be viewed as an attack on millions of Nigerians who identify with his political ideals.
The media office made the allegation on Thursday while reacting to the Presidency’s response to Obi’s recent concerns over threats to his life and business interests.
In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Idris Zekeri Jnr., POMR described the Presidency’s reaction as “tenuous and uncultured,” arguing that it failed to address the substance of Obi’s concerns.
The media office alleged that there has been a growing pattern of harassment, intimidation and hostility directed at Obi, his supporters and individuals perceived to be associated with him politically.
According to the statement, recent actions by government institutions have gone beyond normal political disagreements and now constitute what it described as a coordinated effort to weaken Obi’s resolve and restrict his activities.
POMR also claimed that businesses and investments linked to Obi have come under increasing pressure, creating what it called a perception of a deliberate attempt to undermine his legitimate interests.
The media office said its members, who regularly accompany Obi on political and public engagements across the country, had witnessed what it described as a hostile political environment surrounding the opposition leader.
It further alleged that some supporters of Obi had faced scrutiny from security and anti-corruption agencies, citing cases involving activists and political associates believed to be sympathetic to the former presidential candidate.
The statement comes amid heightened political tensions following Obi’s recent interview in which he expressed concerns about his personal safety and the conduct of government agencies towards him and his supporters.
While insisting that Obi’s concerns should not be dismissed, POMR said the constitutional responsibility of government includes guaranteeing the safety of all citizens, irrespective of political affiliation.
The media office maintained that Obi represents the aspirations of many Nigerians seeking improved governance and economic reforms, adding that any attempt to silence him would amount to an attack on democratic values.
“We demand an immediate halt to hostilities against Obi and an end to the obstruction and intimidation he faces. The federal government will be held accountable for any harm that befalls Mr Obi or his associates,” the statement said.
POMR urged the government to focus on addressing insecurity and economic hardship rather than what it described as an excessive preoccupation with Obi’s activities.
It added that political dissent remains a fundamental component of democracy and warned against the use of state institutions to intimidate opposition voices.
