The Bayelsa State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has dismissed suggestions from the opposition that it is divided in the state,v insisting that it remains united and continues to strengthen its structures across the state’s 105 wards and eight local government areas.
The party said it remains committed to providing what it described as responsive and accountable leadership ahead of the 2028 governorship election.
In a statement on Tuesday issued by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Ikaebimo Mark, the PDP said the state government’s response to its earlier comments on poverty and hunger reflected what it described as a lack of sufficient policy direction in addressing the state’s socio-economic challenges.
It reaffirmed its commitment to holding the state government accountable, saying it will continue to speak on issues affecting the welfare of the people.
The opposition party maintained that its concerns were aimed at drawing attention to what it described as increasing poverty, unemployment, hunger, and the declining standard of living among residents of the state.
According to the party, Bayelsans deserve clear and verifiable information on measures taken by the government over the past six years to reduce poverty, create jobs, and improve living conditions.
It argued that despite significant financial resources available to the state, many young people remain unemployed, businesses continue to struggle, and many families are finding it increasingly difficult to meet their daily needs.
The PDP further stated that while the government’s Prosperity Agenda promised broad-based economic growth and opportunities, many residents were yet to experience the expected benefits.
The party also said it would continue to play its role as a responsible opposition by constructively scrutinising government policies and programmes in the interest of the people.
It added that while Governor Douye Diri is widely perceived to enjoy a cordial working relationship with President Bola Tinubu, such a relationship should translate into tangible economic benefits for Bayelsans.
It urged the government to prioritise practical measures to address the challenges of poverty and hunger confronting residents.
