Okpebholo Rewards Edo Queens With N50m

…as Team presents NWFL, WAFU-B trophies

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has rewarded Edo Queens with N50 million following the team’s triumph in the Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) and West Africa Football Union (WAFU-B) Championship.

Okpebholo announced the reward on Monday at the Festival Hall, Government House, Benin City, during a reception organised in honour of the victorious team.

The players and officials presented the NWFL and WAFU-B trophies to the governor, who commended them for their resilience, determination and outstanding performance.

Edo Queens defeated Ghanaian side, Ampem Darkoa Ladies, 4-1 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in regulation time to win the WAFU-B title and secure qualification for the CAF Women’s Champions League scheduled for South Africa later this year.

The governor said he was confident Edo Queens would win the penalty shootout after observing the composure and tactics of the team’s goalkeeper.

He also praised the goalkeeper’s saves and efforts to distract the Ghanaian penalty takers, describing her performance as crucial to the victory.

“For me, this cup matters to Edo people, and it matters to the country. I must commend the players for their doggedness. I also want to thank the coaching crew and other officials.

“I want to reward the team with the sum of N50 million,” Okpebholo said.

He also commended the Edo Broadcasting Service (EBS) for televising the final live, saying the coverage enabled more Nigerians to watch and celebrate the team’s achievement.

Earlier, Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Hon. Amadin Enabulele, said the team had made the state proud by winning the NWFL and WAFU-B titles in the same season.

“Our girls have truly done us proud. To win the Nigeria Women’s Football League and the WAFU-B championship in the same season is no small feat.

“It requires grit, unity, discipline, resilience and an unshakeable belief in oneself.

“I am particularly proud of the new management for not only keeping the flame burning but also raising the standard even higher,” he said.

Enabulele also commended the coaches, technical crew and management, while praising the leader of the delegation to Burkina Faso, Emperor Jarrett Tenebe, for his support to the team.
