NALPGAM Pushes For Safer, More Compliant LPG Operations

The Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM) has called on industry operators to prioritise safety, regulatory compliance and digitalisation to drive sustainable growth in Nigeria’s LPG sector.

The Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM) has called on industry operators to prioritise safety, regulatory compliance and digitalisation to drive sustainable growth in Nigeria’s LPG sector.

The call followed its 2026 webinar with the theme: “Downstream LPG Operational Excellence and Compliance,” which brought together industry operators, regulators and other stakeholders to address safety risks, market volatility, operational losses and regulatory requirements.

In his opening address, National President, NALPGAM, Edu Inyang, said: “The future of Nigeria’s LPG industry cannot be achieved by increasing volumes alone. We must grow safely, responsibly, efficiently and sustainably. Safety is not an occasional campaign; it must become a continuous industry culture.”

According to a statement issued on Friday, a key outcome was the adoption of the aspiration for a “NALPGAM Standard of Operational Excellence,” built on four principles: safe and well-maintained facilities, competent and trained operators, compliant processes, and customer protection.

It added that participants urged operators to embed safety in daily operations, strengthen preventive maintenance, comply with licensing and incident-reporting requirements, and eliminate unsafe practices, including unauthorised propane blending and illegal decanting.

“Compliance is not merely a regulatory burden; it is a business advantage. Well-managed LPG operations reduce accidents, improve efficiency, protect investments and strengthen public confidence in our industry,” Inyang said.

The statement explained that the webinar also highlighted digital technologies including smart filling systems, automated tank gauges, load cells, flow meters and vehicle tracking as practical tools to reduce product losses, improve accountability and strengthen operational efficiency.

It added that with Nigeria targeting LPG consumption of approximately five million tonnes annually by 2030, stakeholders called for increased industry participation in the Decade of Gas LPG penetration programme and stronger collaboration to expand access, improve cylinder traceability and promote certified local manufacturing.

It stated that NALPGAM further called on regulators and programme coordinators to involve its members in implementing LPG penetration and cylinder recirculation initiatives, leveraging their nationwide reach and proximity to consumers.

“Our aspiration is clear: every LPG facility must be safe and properly maintained, every operator competent and adequately trained, every process compliant, and every customer protected. This is the standard of operational excellence we must collectively pursue,” Inyang said.

“The association reaffirmed its commitment to constructive engagement with government, regulators and industry stakeholders to build a safer, more efficient and competitive LPG market.

“NALPGAM’s message is clear: safety must be the industry’s culture, compliance its character, technology its catalyst, and operational excellence its competitive advantage,” the statement added.
