The Chairman of the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC), Mr. Patrick Enyi, has restated the commission’s preparedness to conduct a free, fair and credible local government election slated for August 22, 2026.
The council election is scheduled to hold in the 171 electoral wards and 2,947 polling units across the 13 local government areas of the state.
Enyi made the assertion in Abakaliki, the state capital, on Thursday during a stakeholders’ engagement meeting convened by the commission ahead of the August 22, 2026, local government councillorship and chairmanship election.
He noted that adequate arrangements had been made by the commission, including the training of ad hoc staff/personnel and the readiness of the voters’ register.
Enyi warned that the commission would not tolerate any form of compromise from any quarter during the exercise.
“We have approached the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), obtained the voters’ register, which will be displayed to the public in no distant time.
“Today marks another milestone to inform stakeholders that the local government election will take place on August 22, 2026.”
The EBSIEC boss reassured the electorate that whoever emerges victorious in the election would be declared the winner.
“I assure candidates of political parties that the election will be free, fair and credible. We will not tolerate any form of intimidation from anybody.”
Earlier in an address, the Commissioner in charge of Information, Voter Education and Publicity, Hon. Collins Agbo, maintained that the stakeholders’ engagement was convened to highlight the activities of the commission so far.
“We have carried out sensitisation and awareness activities regarding our programmes across the 13 local government areas of the state.
“We invited representatives of various political parties, NGOs, the media, traditional rulers, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, and other stakeholders to brainstorm and chart the way forward towards the actualisation of a hitch-free poll.”
Highlights of the event included the unveiling of the commission’s logo, as well as its mission and vision, by the Chairman, Patrick Enyi.
The event was attended by commissioners of the commission, including Mr. Collins Agbo (Voter Education/Publicity), Dr. Fidelis Uguru (Secretary), Dr. Hycinth Nwoba (Logistics/Field Operations), Barrister Stanley Odanwu (Legal and Security), and Dr. Emmanuel Ibiam (Finance and Accounts), among others.
Other stakeholders who participated in the meeting included the chairmen of political parties, the State Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Mrs. Nwigwe Queendalene, members of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, civil society organisations (CSOs), and security agencies.
