…Set up delegation to Ekiti
The Senate, on Wednesday, mourned former Senator Anthony Adeniyi, who represented Ekiti South Senatorial District between 2011 and 2015, and hailed his role in mobilising support for President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2023 general elections.
New Telegraph recalls that Adeniyi died on June 24, 2026, at the age of 75. Until his death, he served as Ekiti State Chairman of the South West Agenda for Asiwaju (SWAGA), the political movement that canvassed support for Tinubu’s emergence as president.
The Senate considered a motion on the death moved by its spokesperson, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, APC, Ekiti South. Adaramodu described the deceased as a respected lawyer and politician whose dedication to public service, integrity and the legal profession earned him widespread admiration.
He said Adeniyi’s coordination of SWAGA in Ekiti contributed significantly to the mobilisation that preceded Tinubu’s emergence as president in 2023.
The lawmaker noted that the late senator’s passion for democracy drove his active participation in politics, during which he served as Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Capital Market. He urged the Senate to honour Adeniyi for his contributions to Nigeria’s democracy and to Tinubu’s political journey.
In his contribution, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, LP, Abia South, described Adeniyi as a committed legislator who made meaningful contributions in the Senate.
He recalled the late senator’s sense of humour, saying colleagues fondly called him a “herbalist” because he often joked that he would turn anyone who disturbed him into a bird.
The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, APC, Kano North, described the deceased as an active and dedicated lawmaker, particularly for his work on the Constitution Review Committee. He prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul.
Also speaking, Senator Cyril Fasuyi, APC, Ekiti North, commended Adeniyi for coordinating SWAGA in Ekiti State in support of Tinubu’s presidential bid.
The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, described Adeniyi as a dedicated legislator who contributed to the success of Tinubu’s political journey before and after his emergence as president.
Akpabio directed senators to observe a minute’s silence in honour of the late Adeniyi. He also constituted a Senate delegation, chaired by the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, to pay a condolence visit to the deceased’s family
Other members of the delegation are Senator Yemi Adaramodu, Ekiti South; Senator Cyril Fasuyi, Ekiti North; Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, Abia South; Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire, Ondo Central; Senator Sunday Karimi, Kogi West; Senator Abdul Ningi, Bauchi Central; Senator Babangida Hussaini, Jigawa North-West; and Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas, Delta South.
