Sporting Lagos head coach Jeffrey Buter has praised his tactical adjustments after his side secured an impressive 3-2 away victory over Plateau United in the Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL.

The Tech Boys maintained their impressive away form with a hard-fought win at the New Jos Stadium on Sunday, recording their third away victory in the league this season.

Fierce Battle In Jos

Sporting Lagos made a bright start and took the lead in the 10th minute when Aliyu Baba capitalised on Solomon Uloko’s pass, rounded Plateau United goalkeeper Okiemute Odah and calmly slotted home.

Plateau United responded with sustained attacking pressure and drew level 10 minutes before half-time through Victor Dawa, who unleashed a powerful effort from outside the penalty area.

Dawa struck again in first-half stoppage time, converting from close range after a series of saves by Sporting Lagos goalkeeper Clinton Lawani to give the hosts a 2-1 advantage at the break.

However, Sporting Lagos came out strongly in the second half and restored parity eight minutes after the restart. Baba provided the assist, slipping the ball into Victor Samuel’s path for the forward to finish from close range.

The contest took another turn in the 80th minute when Plateau United’s Alex Aghahowa was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for a foul on Sporting Lagos midfielder Hadi Haruna.

Sporting Lagos capitalised on their numerical advantage, with Jacob Aondona netting the decisive goal in the 83rd minute to seal all three points for the visitors.

Buter Hails Tactical Adjustment

Speaking after the match, Buter credited his tactical changes for helping Sporting Lagos overcome Plateau United’s pressing game and secure the victory.

“First of all, thanks to God. It wasn’t an easy victory. I think we started the first 20 minutes very well. We did our analysis and prepared on how to overcome their first line of press,” he said.

“We switched our press to a 4-5-1, which limited their wingers and fullbacks from having time and space. I think we played a very good second half. We dominated the game, found the early equaliser and went on to finish the game.”

Sporting Lagos Confident Against Any Opposition

The Sporting Lagos manager also stressed the importance of building confidence and consistency, insisting that his team must be ready to deliver strong performances regardless of their opponents or venue.

“Regardless of where we go or where we play, we have to show that we are capable of performances like this. To be able to do it in this stadium against a team like Plateau United is incredible,” Buter added.

The victory strengthened Sporting Lagos’ position in the NPFL standings, leaving them just two points behind league leaders Rivers United and second-placed defending champions Rangers International.
