The Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR) has dismissed suggestions by former Labour Party Vice Presidential candidate, Dr Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, that no single individual, including the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Mr Peter Obi, can rescue Nigeria from its current challenges.
POMR, in a statement issued on Sunday by its spokesman, Idris Zekeri Jnr, said that while Nigeria is facing deep-rooted economic, political and institutional problems, Obi possesses the leadership qualities and track record required to begin the nation’s recovery.
The group noted that Datti’s comments reflected the enormity of the challenges confronting the country but argued that they failed to take into account Obi’s demonstrated capacity in public office.
According to POMR, Obi’s performance as governor of Anambra State remains evidence of prudent management of public resources, institutional reforms and people-centred governance.
“Peter Obi does not approach Nigeria’s challenges as an experiment. His record in Anambra provides evidence of what he can do with limited resources when public office is treated as a responsibility rather than an opportunity for personal enrichment,” the statement said.
The organisation said Obi prioritised education, healthcare, infrastructure and human development during his tenure, while maintaining fiscal discipline and reducing waste in government.
POMR stressed that the issue before Nigerians was not whether a single individual could single-handedly solve all the country’s problems, but whether the nation could elect a leader with the competence, character and courage to initiate the process of national recovery.
“We believe Peter Obi can—and will. He will not do it alone. He will do it by building strong institutions, assembling competent Nigerians, confronting corruption, cutting waste, investing in production and restoring confidence in government,” the group stated.
The statement further argued that Nigeria does not need what it described as a “fake messiah,” but a leader who understands that public funds are a public trust and who can deploy limited resources to achieve measurable results.
POMR maintained that Obi’s record in office had shown such understanding and expressed confidence that he could replicate similar achievements at the national level if given the opportunity in the 2027 presidential election.
The group concluded that Nigeria remains salvageable and that Obi possesses the leadership credentials needed to lead the country’s rescue and renewal.
