13 rescued as building collapse injures 16 in Kano
Thirteen people were rescued after a residential building collapsed in the Dan Dishe area of Kwanar Yashi, Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State, early Saturday morning.
Sunday PUNCH gathered that 16 people were injured in the incident.
The Kano State Fire Service said its Emergency Response Unit received a distress call about the incident at about 4:32am and immediately mobilised personnel from its headquarters to the scene.
The service’s Public Relations Officer, Saminu Abdullahi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday.
According to him, the collapsed residential building measured approximately 20 by 30 feet.
He said 13 victims were rescued from the rubble, with 10 of them rescued alive while three others were found unconscious.
The victims rescued alive were identified as Al-Mustapha Yusuf (15) Khadija Yusuf (seven) Ummusalama Yusuf (10) Madina Yusuf (six) and Hafsat Yusuf (nine).
“Upon receiving the report, men of the Service from the Headquarters were immediately mobilised to the scene. On arrival, they discovered that a residential building of about 20 by 30 feet had collapsed,” the statement said.
The fire service identified the three unconscious victims as Affan Yusuf (five); Hassana Yusuf, (seven); and Ummulkursum Yusuf (nine months.)
It added that eight other people rescued alive could not be immediately identified.
The victims were subsequently handed over to Usman Ibrahim, identified as the brother of their father, for further necessary attention.
The fire service said the cause of the collapse was yet to be established, adding that investigation was ongoing.
The service urged residents to observe necessary safety precautions and report signs of structural weakness to relevant authorities to prevent further incidents.
“The Kano State Fire Service urges members of the public to observe all necessary safety precautions, particularly during the rainy season, to prevent similar incidents,” the statement added.
